Stars in Croatia
Have you ever thought about just how small we are? Honestly, I am so self-centered that I don’t often think about how small I am and how little of an impact my life will be in the grand scheme of things. I am not saying that to put myself down, but it is true.
I lived in Croatia for 3 months with several other people, and occasionally we would have overnight sails. When we would do this, we would dock in a quiet bay versus a busy marina. I remember how beautiful it was the day of our first overnight sail. The sun was bright, the sky was clear, and it was decently warm. Perfect weather for tanning...and sailing! Some of us took a swim in the sea and others stayed on deck to start preparing for dinner. We had a barbecue. Did you know they make one-time-use “grills” for camping? So, we barbecued on the boat, which was awesome!
After we all ate, we put some worship music on a Bluetooth speaker as we watched a beautiful sunset. Everyone was getting sleepy from the meal, so little by little people went into their cabins for the night. On a side note, one of my friends fixed me a cup of tea and accidentally put salt instead of sugar in the tea, so it was disgusting! Once I got a new cup, I was as relaxed as could be. You could hear the movement of the water and crickets from the shore. I decided to lie down, and it was to my amazement what I saw!
It had been a clear day, and it was a clear night as well. Since we were docked in a bay, there was no light pollution. There were stars too innumerous to count! There were still several of us on deck at the time, and all of us were silent, just staring in awe of God’s masterful creation. It got me thinking. All of these stars, I can’t even begin to count them. And this is just our galaxy. And there are millions, if not billions, of other galaxies. I’m on this tiny planet called earth, and if you were to “zoom-out” just to the moon, there’s no way you’d be able to see me, my house, my car, or anything I own or care about.
Seeing the stars like this made me realize just how small I am. And then I had an even bigger revelation. God created all of these things just by speaking them into existence, and He also created me. God even knows me by name and every one of my hairs are numbered. “But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So, don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31
He has pursued me to have an intimate relationship with Him and loves me unconditionally. He sent His one and only Son, Jesus, to this earth to die for my sins and bear my shame. The thought of all of this brought me to tears. I am so small in the grand scheme of things, yet God cares about me so much. And this is true of every single person on this earth. This perspective helps me to look at things through a different lens. It is much more difficult for me to hate someone when I realize that God loves them the exact same as He loves me, and He sacrificed just as much to have a relationship with them.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23
